WELCOME TO THE 2011 NCA NATIONAL SPECIALTY: THIRD TIME’S A CHARM

CHIC DNA Banking Clinic

Where: Kern Pavilion (grooming building)

When: 9am-5pm, May 3-6th. 9am-1pm, Saturday, May 7th

Cost: Normally $20, but the NCA Charitable Trust is providing a grant to pay for all samples collected at the National. There is no cost to the owner to have their dog’s blood drawn.

Who: All Newfoundlands, pet or show, healthy or sick

Why: To store DNA on dogs for future research. All information is confidential. For more information visit www.offa.org or www.caninehealthinfo.org

We will again be offering a DNA banking clinic where you can have your Newf’s blood drawn for storage in the Canine Health Information Center’s DNA repository. The DNA is stored for future health-related research studies. All Newfs should participate whether pet or breeding dogs, healthy or sick. Unregistered dogs (rescues) and puppies not yet registered can participate as well. Blood is drawn by experienced veterinarians or veterinary technicians and the fur is not clipped or shaved.

Health surveys can be printed from the CHIC website ahead of time and turned in at the time the dog’s blood is drawn, or, if there are confidentiality concerns, the health survey can be filled out and mailed in by the owner to CHIC. Paperwork is checked only for completeness at the clinic. All information provided will be kept confidential.

Appointments are not necessary and walk-ins are welcome. However, it is helpful to let us know when you are likely to have the dog’s blood drawn. Contact Jennifer Zablotny, DVM.

Please use this form to preregister pdf

Where: Bavarian Inn, Tower Entrance

When: Friday, May 6th, 10am-2pm

Cost: $33, cash or check payable to NCA

Who: All Newfoundlands. Breeding animals should be done yearly.

Why: To evaluate the eye for diseases, inheritable or not, so as to make informed breeding decisions or recommendations regarding research in the future.

Health Education Expo

For your convenience, the Health and Longevity Committee will be hosting a Health Education Expo in the Rotary Building adjacent to the Kern Pavilion. Some examples of programs available are videos from the AKC CHF Parent Club Conference and podcasts from the Genome Barks. In addition, Pam Rubio, Dr. Jennifer Zablotny, DVM, and Lori Littleford will give multiple presentations on navigating the OFA database. Video programs will run throughout the day, and health pamphlets and literature on various topics will be available.
